Eco-Schools is a global sustainable school certification programme which aims at engaging the young generation in building knowledge, attitudes, values and skills to take positive handprint action.

The Eco-Schools programme was developed in 1994 realizing the need to involve young people in finding solutions to environmental and sustainable development challenges at the local level, as identified at the UN Conference on Environment and Development of 1992. The programme was initiated by member organizations of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) with the support of the European Commission.

The programme is now being implemented throughout the world. There are schools in Europe, Africa, North America, South America, Oceania and Asia. Presently Eco-Schools is being implemented in 70+ countries which share the same methodology, concept, and are identified by the Eco-Schools logo and Green Flag certification.

The Eco-Schools programme was initiated in 2014 in India by Centre for Environment Education (CEE). CEE is a national institution and designated as the Centre of Excellence in the field of Environmental Education. There are several schools across India who have joined this unique programme and took the challenge of becoming a sustainable school.
